About Cycling Ireland

Cycling Ireland is the National Governing Body for cycling across the island of Ireland. We govern and develop the sport across multiple disciplines, support high performance athletes on the world stage, and promote cycling as a lifelong, inclusive activity. With a dedicated volunteer base, a professional staff team, and strong partnerships with Sport Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland  and international federations, Cycling Ireland is at an exciting stage of growth and transformation.

Role Purpose

Independent Board Members are appointed to bring external expertise, objective judgment, and independent thinking to the governance of Cycling Ireland. They play a vital role in ensuring effective oversight, strong governance, and the strategic growth of the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute actively to the Board’s role in setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability, and safeguarding Cycling Ireland’s values
  • Provide expertise and independent judgement, particularly in the areas of marketing, commercial development, IT, or cyber security/data protection
  • Ensure Cycling Ireland complies with legal, regulatory, and governance obligations, including Sport Ireland’s Governance Code for Sport
  • Oversee the financial sustainability, risk management, and long-term development of the organisation
  • Represent Cycling Ireland with integrity and professionalism in when interacting with members, partners, and external stakeholders
  • Participate in Board committees and working groups, as required.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Senior-level expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Marketing, sponsorship, and commercial growth strategies
    • IT infrastructure, digital transformation, or data systems
    • Cyber security, GDPR, or data protection compliance
  • Ability to think strategically, challenge constructively, and contribute to sound decision-making
  • High standards of integrity, independence, and commitment to good governance
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Availability to commit to approx. 6–8 Board meetings per year and associated preparation/committee work

Desirable

  • Previous experience serving on a Board or committee
  • Knowledge of the sporting, not-for-profit, or membership organisation landscape in Ireland
  • Passion for cycling, sport, or community development

Time Commitment

  • Approx. 6–8 Board meetings per year (2–3 hours each)
  • Annual General Meeting and strategic planning sessions
  • Occasional committee/working group participation
  • Approx. 8–12 days per year in total

Term & Appointment

  • This appointment is a co-option and will be ratified at the AGM in May 2026 as per Article 47 of the current constitution.  Independent Board Members are appointed for a 3-year term, renewable in line with Cycling Ireland’s Constitution.
  • Appointments are made in accordance with the company’s governance framework and are subject to approval by the Board.
