Sam Bennett won the International Performance of the Year at the Cycling Ireland Annual Awards for the second consecutive year on Saturday night.
The Cycling Ireland Awards Evening saw members of the cycling community recognised in 13 categories, both participants and volunteers, across the various cycling disciplines.
Bennett notched up 13 wins this season including on stage 3 and stage 14 of the Vuelta a España. His stage 3 victory was enough to see the Carrick-On-Suir rider claim the green jersey while compatriot Nicolas Roche wore the leader’s red jersey.
Among the recipients of the Special Achievement Awards was Katie-George Dunlevy and pilot Eve McCrystal. The paracycling duo claimed their fifth World Title, with Gold in the time trial at the Road World Championships and added a Silver medal in the Road Race. Their attention now firmly focused on adding to their impressive medal haul at Tokyo 2020.
Lara Gillespie of Scott Orwell Wheelers was another rider to receive a Special Achievement Award and was named Female Rider of the Year. Gillespie won Bronze at the Junior Track World Championships and three Silver medals at the Junior Track European Championships.
Cycling is blessed with countless dedicated and committed volunteers. Among these is Phil Skelton who was instrumental in the introduction of new ‘dangerous overtaking of a cyclist’ legislation. Skelton has been a driving force behind making our roads safer for cyclists and rightly deserves the award for Outstanding Service to Cycling.

Our International 20×20 Women in Sport Award this week goes to Mary Hickey Nolan who has the unique distinction of being the only woman to have completed all 40 Dublin Marathons. A phenomenal achievement but only one of many on the CV of this exceptional woman who this year celebrated her 66th birthday.
Since its inception in 1980 the Dublin Marathon has gone from strength to strength. The first year there were 2,000 entrants with Mary Hickey Nolan being one of 70 women taking part. Today Dublin has grown into one of the world’s great city marathons with 22,500 – including 7,000 women – setting out this year for the 40th staging of the event. Over the years there have been 13 constants in the event – 12 men and Mary Hickey Nolan. As she says herself, it is a club no one else can join and once you leave you can’t get back in!
Mary Hickey Nolan is an amazing woman, last year she ran the complete coast of the island of Ireland and in doing so raised over 30k for the the Lifeboats ( RNLI ). This year she was off around the coast again, this time by bike, to raise more funds for the RNLI. Amongst her many running achievements she has taken part in and completed the 6 day long Marathon des Sables across the Sahara desert and event fully deserving of it’s title the toughest footrace on earth!

On Friday 14th of June An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar opened phase two of the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena on the Abbotstown campus.
Phase Two of the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena comprises of covered synthetic pitch facilities, primarily designed for rugby, soccer and Gaelic games. The development includes: an indoor pitch for soccer & Gaelic games, which can accommodate a number of sports; a ½ sized indoor rugby pitch; and ancillary facilities including changing & player rooms, offices and meeting rooms.
Speaking at the opening, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, said: “This is a red-letter day for the Sport Ireland Campus and for Irish sport. I am a great believer in Government investment in sport. Sport helps bring communities together in a way that is both remarkable and inspiring. The budget for sport increased by 12% last year as part of our strategy to double it by 2027.
“When our athletes and teams compete at the highest level they carry our hopes and our dreams. We share their heartache in defeat, their joy in victory. We are with them win or lose. The Government’s mission is to provide world-class facilities, so our athletes and teams can compete on the world stage. The expanded Sport Ireland Campus has become a very busy venue in a short space of time and I hope that it will contribute to continued success for Irish sport in the coming years.”
The commencement of Phase Two was announced in July 2017 as a two year project with a construction cost of €24.2 million. The project has been completed in this timeframe at a construction cost of €24.4 million.
Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, added: “The opening of Phase Two will add to the existing world-class facilities already available in Phase One of the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena, which was opened in early 2017. With the addition of the field sport facilities, the Sport Ireland Campus is providing access for an ever-wider range of sports. With Project 2040 and the National Development Plan also committing to the development of a National velodrome and badminton centre, the Sport Ireland Campus has firmly been established as the home of sport in Ireland.”
Phase Two of the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena is the latest addition to the Sport Ireland Campus, with other facilities on site including: the National Aquatic Centre, Sport Ireland Institute, Irish Sport HQ, National Diving Centre, National Horse Sport Arena, National Cross Country Track, Cricket Ireland High Performance Centre and Special Olympics Ireland HQ, among others.

Dublin City Sport and Wellbeing Partnership will be Going GAGA again in the coming weeks as they repeat last years Getting All Girls Active campaign around the city and all over social media.
They’ve also been very active this week on the Draw taking place in Dublin for the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Beat The Barge Zombie Run had 233 participants registered in the 4 km run. With lots of Families walking as well. There was a fantastic turn out of supporting spectators and a great effort for fancy dress.
Good to see the amenities been utilised with Kayaking & Canoeing also happening. At Vicarstown Canal Fest & Beat The Barge overall there were 400 people out active in body and mind
SVT Youth Leaders at Zombie Beat the Barge
22 of our SVT Youth sport leaders also received their Sport Leader Level 2 Award after the Beat the Barge run which they completed on their mid term break earlier this year. This group of sport leaders have over the past 2 years of SVT Activity & Wellness Hub come along to event after event and helped out in so many ways.
To give you an idea of some events they gladly help organise and assisted at were operation transformation, Easter camp, Bikes & Bites, Athletics Summer camp, Assisting at learn to cycle camp, 3 day cycling camp in Emo, Fossey Mountain camp out. Canoeing & Kayaking sessions and many more.
This group of young people are also nominated for the youth category in the up coming Laois Community & Voluntary Awards.
