Founded in 1909, Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC) is a busy club with 8 floodlit courts, a  badminton/pickleball court indoor hall and recently renovated changing rooms and bar. The Club is in the  middle of an exciting multi-year development programme and has always had a substantial junior programme.  

GLTC wishes to appoint a Junior Head Coach to support all aspects of junior tennis, including retention,  participation, development and organisation. Building on previous successes, the Junior Head Coach is  expected to bring new ideas and energy. This is a key appointment in the development of GLTC and will report  directly to the Director of Tennis.

Role Description and Objectives 

  1. Junior player participation 

Contribute to the Club’s priorities with specific strategic initiatives to (a) create an inclusive  environment for all juniors, (b) maintain fun & interest for all ages but especially teens and (c)  increase the number of females staying in tennis 

  1. Junior Tennis Coaching  

In conjunction with the Director of Tennis, plan and implement a modern tennis coaching programme for junior members of all levels.  

  1. Junior Competitions Organisation 

Assist in the organisation of internal championships, box leagues, interclub matches and Junior  Open tournaments as requested and agreed with the Director of Tennis and Junior Officer. 

  1. School Holiday Camps & Supervised Play 

Ensure dedicated camps are run during school holidays, with a blend of coaching, drills, supervised  matches & fun games; organise structed supervised play sessions during the year 

  1. Player Recruitment 

Work with the Director of Tennis on new player recruitment from a mix of local school initiatives and  standard sport uptake 

  1. Junior Tennis Development 

In conjunction with the Director of Tennis, plan and implement a focussed performance  programme for juniors to participate at the highest level and be able to transition to senior  competitive tennis.  

The exact content and responsibilities of this role in relation to coaching, including collaboration with other  coaches and coaching oversight, will be discussed as part of the recruitment process.

Qualifications, Competencies & Skills 

– Accredited tennis coach with Tennis Ireland (or similar international organisation), minimum Level 3.  Experienced (>5 years) Level 2 coaches may apply. 

– Experience and proven track record of coaching children 

– Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills 

– A high level of organisational skills 

– Competent with use of technology, social media, email, MS Office & associated governance. – Good knowledge of TI tournament software and related tennis products 

– Up to date child safeguarding and Garda vetting with a commitment to child protection & inclusive  coaching practices 

– First aid, defibrillator & all welfare qualifications recommended.  

Other Requirements 

The Junior Head Coach will be required to: 

– Create and operate to a multi-year plan for junior tennis in GLTC (with an outline to be presented  during interview) in conjunction with the Director of Tennis. This plan should be reviewed annually  and incorporate appropriate programmes and ideas from developments in Tennis Ireland/TCI and  internationally 

– Be available to attend different committees to assist in team selection, organisation of Club tennis  events and update on plans, activities and achievements. 

– Work with the Club’s Child Protection Officer(s) to ensure the club adheres to its child protection  obligations 

– Communicate tennis activities to members & parents regularly with a clear & transparent approach.  – Work closely with the Director of Tennis, Junior Officer/Committee and the Club Operations Manager. 

Hours of Work & Remuneration:  

The Junior Head Coach will be engaged as an independent contractor but must be available to work flexibly to  suit GLTC’s tennis programmes. Remuneration will comprise an hourly coaching fee for organised tennis  activities and administration work (estimated c.750 hours p.a.); this will be supplemented by additional junior  coaching activities in the club. We also envisage a share-of-profits model to align and incentivise our interests  to increase and develop the active player population – this will be explained during interview. Given the nature  of the role the majority of these hours during school term time will be in the early afternoon to early evening,  Monday to Friday, but the role is not restricted to those times/days.
