Remembrance 5K Run – November 9th

The third annual Remembrance Run 5k will take place in the Phoenix Park on Sunday, November 9th. This year’s Remembrance Run – open to walkers, joggers and runners- will again have a Special Remembrance Theme of Family or Friends passed, or who may be currently struggling with illness or other life challenges.

This is a truly unique event with a wonderful atmosphere – commentary, music and a special Wall of Remembrance that was filled to capacity last year with signatures and special messages. This is an event that enables you to celebrate your own Gift of Days and Fullness of Health while remembering those close to us.

The Remembrance Run 5k is organised by Athletics Ireland in association with www.mycharity.ie. See full details of this year’s event at: www.remembrancerun.ie  A video of highlights from last year’s event is also available on Youtube under the title-“Remembrance Run 5k”. Entry for the event is now open at: www.remembrancerun.ie  Make a date today- to join with family, friends or work colleagues for a unique experience that will create lasting memories.

The ethos of the event is that of celebration as we want participants “to take some time out” to savour those precious memories of people past or those currently struggling with illness or other life challenges. In keeping with the ethos of the event there will be no chip timing for this year’s event as we encourage participants to forget the clock and enjoy the occasion.

Rememberance Run 5K

NGB of the Month: Archery Ireland

The association:

The Irish National Archery Federation which was formed in the 1950’s changed its name to the Irish Amateur Archery Association in the 1970’s and is now known as Archery Ireland (AI). The association is affiliated to World Archery which itself recently changed it’s name from FITA (Fédération Internationale de Tir à l’Arc). The current membership of archery Ireland now stands at 1300 full members and a further 3000 associated members.  The associated membership is made up of the, Irish Student Archery Association, the Northern Ireland Archery Society and IFAF (Irish Field Archery Federation).  As the governing body for Archery in Ireland, AI is responsible for governing all forms of archery including; Target Archery sometimes known as Olympic Archery, Field Archery and 3D archery, all of which are governed by World Archery rules.

First Olympic Medal:

Under the rules of the 1908 Olympic Games which were held in London, women were only allowed to take part in sport if they were fully clothed. As archery was the only sport where this was possible, Beatrice Geraldine Hill-Low born 1st Jan 1868 and from Ardee Co Louth, was chosen to represent Ireland.  With archers shooting a traditional long bow, competing over two days and shooting 40 arrows at 60 yards and 24 arrows at 50 yards on both days, Beatrice took the bronze medal for Ireland.

http://www.irisholympians.com/2012/07/beatrice-hill-lowe-irelands-first.html

Modern Equipment:

Currently the majority of archers shoot either a recurve bow or a compound bow with speeds in excess of 400 feet per second. The recurve bow, often called an Olympic Bow which is used in the modern Olympics is shooting at a target 70mts away. The overall sizes of the target faces are 122cm, however the centre of the targets known as the X, measures 6.1 cm.

Competitions:

Unlike other sports; in archery all archers compete together on the shooting line, regardless of age, gender, or physical ability. Archery has gained some popularity as a minority sport in Ireland over recent times and there are Archery Shoots organised throughout the Island of Ireland most weekends of the year. Details of these may be found on the Archery Ireland website and via various social media sites. The most common type of competition is the Olympic style event however, field archery is becoming more popular and this year saw the first ever 3D event held in Ireland under World Archery rules. 3D archery is a sport which simulates hunting, and allows archers to move around a forest setting and shoot at twenty four rubber animal targets.

Growth:

In 2010 the Irish Archery Association had five hundred members, which has grown to thirteen hundred in 2014. The growth can mainly be attributed to more TV coverage of the sport which has helped to increase awareness throughout the world, and also AI’s club development programme and assistance with grants to fund equipment for new club. There has been a wide range of people taking up archery with the youngest member of Archery Ireland just 4 years old and the eldest member over seventy.

Beginner’s lessons:

Beginner’s lessons are available at all Archery Ireland clubs and generally run for six weeks. Participants are advised not to purchase archery equipment until after completion of the course. They are then directed to specialised retailers who can with assess the appropriate poundage and measurements of bows, so that new archers are set up with equipment that will safely allow them to reach their potential.

Remuneration:

As with any sport; the more time and commitment that any individual puts into it, the more they will benefit. Regardless of whether archery is for them a form of relaxation, or a means of competing at a friendly or more competitive level, local clubs can assist and support every member. In order to become a high ranking archer in Ireland, and to attend international competitions, an athlete needs to train five days a week. On average a days training will consist of shooting approximately 350 arrows with a draw weight of about 44lb for each arrow. This will give a total draw weight for the week of approximately 30 tons. At this level, both body fitness and mental fitness play a big part in an athlete’s training. The amount time invested in psychological training compared to the time invested physical training will differ from archer to archer, however a generally accepted ratio would be  70% psychological  and 30% physical.

Recent achievements:

In the 2013 World Championship held in Antailya, Turkey, acher Mel Lawton shooting in the ladies compound section came 8th which is the highest place ever achieved by an Irish archer in this category. While at the same event and in his 11th World Championship, archer Keith Hanlon came 11th in the gents recurve section. This is another highest standard achieved by an Irish archer in this category. The next major international event which many archery are currently in training for is the European Games in Bakue 2015.

National Exercise Referral Framework- Public Consultation open until 3rd November

The draft National Exercise Referral Framework has been published for public consultation with a closing date for submissions of 3rd November at 11.45pm. The Federation along with the Irish Sports Council and a number of our members were part of the expert group which helped provide input to the framework.
The Framework is intended to allow healthcare professionals, such as GPs and Physios, to refer a patient to an exercise programme in the community and this could include programmes developed and run by National Governing Bodies of Sport and initiatives of  the Local Sports Partnerships. Donegal Sports Partnership were involved in a pilot programme called the Green Prescription programme which was successful in engaging people referred into community programmes in a number of settings in Donegal.
A presentation on the draft Framework can be viewed by clicking here
The Draft NERF document can be viewed here: NERF Draft 2
The feedback form can be viewed here: NERF Draft 2 Public consultation feedback form

Background
The Health Service Executive (HSE) developed the GP Exercise Referral Programme (GPERP) to support individuals to become more physically active. However, a recent SWOT analysis of the GPERP outlined the need for a new national framework for exercise referral. Following a tender process, Dublin City University (DCU) were commissioned by the HSE to develop a new National Exercise for Health Referral Framework for Ireland. The project is overseen by a Working Group** and a Cross Divisional Group within the HSE.
Physical activity has both disease prevention and health promoting properties. Regular physical activity has been called a miracle drug, one that has numerous health benefits and can substantially increase the disability-free lifespan. It enhances wellbeing, physical and mental health, prevents disease, and provides economic benefits to both the individual and the state. It contributes to environmental sustainability, and improves social connectedness and quality of life.
It is anticipated that NERF will be delivered in the supportive context of Healthy Ireland’s National Health and Wellbeing Framework, the National Physical Activity Plan and the Chronic Disease Prevention Programme.
This document presents a draft framework for a feasible and sustainable national exercise referral system for Ireland. NERF will focus on Individuals living with an established non-communicable diseases or disability. The framework recommends that inactive, sedentary or individuals at risk of developing a NCD are given brief advice or brief intervention, which is outside the remit of the NERF.
Consultation Process
An important part in the process of developing the framework is consultation. A broad-based Advisory Panel made up of representatives from the health (N=36; including clinicians, clinical leads, health promotion and allied health professionals) and non- health sectors (N=30; including recreation and leisure professionals, physical activity providers, academics and advocacy groups) have already been engaged in the consultation process.
An Expert Symposium which consisted of presentations from international experts on Exercise Referral was held in DCU in June 2014. At this symposium the Advisory Panel and international experts discussed the direction and role of exercise referral within the Irish healthcare system. The following day, the international experts and the working group reviewed the symposium advice and NERF Draft 1 was developed. Draft 1 was distributed to the Advisory Panel for review. Guided by their feedback, NERF Draft 2 is now ready for public consultation.

Q1. What is your daily routine when you are training?

Due to the nature of my sport (5 Sports) my daily routine is quite varied. The consistent part is that each day has between 3-5 sessions and of course I eat and sleep A LOT. Usually it will consist of a block of training in the morning and another in the evening. Q5. What’s your favourite film?

Hmm that’s a hard one – Pentathlon, haha yes it’s a movie but no its probably in top 10 worst movies ever made where Dolph Lundgren (Russian Opponent from Rocky) plays a Russian Pentathlete who flees the country, it’s pretty comical. STATEMENT FROM FEDERATION OF IRISH SPORT RE FUNDING FOR SPORT IN BUDGET 2015

“The Federation of Irish Sport welcome the announcement today that there is to be no reduction in the current funding for sport from the €42.5 million allocated in 2014.  The fact that a floor in the funding levels for sport has now been reached provides a positive platform for further investment against a significantly improving fiscal backdrop.

In our pre-budget submission the Federation called on the Government to return the current funding for sport -as distributed through the Irish Sports Council to the Federation’s 100 plus members – to 2011 levels by 2016. The Federation remains’ committed to working with the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport through the revised estimates process and into next year to secure this additional €4.4 million by 2016.

We also welcome the Government’s decision to provide a third round of the Sports Capital Programme. The decision to introduce a third round of the Programme is evidence, we believe, of an increasing recognition of the contribution and role of sport to communities nationwide and the importance of indigenous niche sectors in underpinning our recovery

The Federation had also asked Government to extend the tax relief currently in place for donations to sporting bodies in connection to capital projects to items of current spend. In that context it is our understanding  that the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport are establishing a working group to examine the proposal in more detail. We look forward to actively participating in that review process.

Government investment will remain crucial to sport in Ireland but sport also wants to play its part in generating revenue for the sector by unlocking its hidden financial potential which we are confident is there. At present Irish Sport is the only part of the not for profit sector which does not to benefit from a tax relief on “current spend”. We are looking to Government to encourage the development of a culture of giving to sport in line with other areas.

The type of sports programmes that the Federation envisage would benefit from this relief should it be introduced would include programmes that bring different sports to new places; that support our existing and developing athletes as well as programmes that can target hard to reach members of our communities; that can develop our coaches and look after our athletes”.

Role of Sport in Irish Society - Breakfast Event

Bernard Brogan, recently appointed President of the Federation of Irish Sport noted:

“This is the first time in six years that there has been no reduction in the current funding for Irish Sport. That, together with the announcement around the Sports Capital Funding is good news. As a country we now need to look at ways of increasing the revenues available to sport and the Federation will continue to work with Government to pursue our target of getting back to 2011 levels of funding by 2016 as well as ways of increasing levels of private sector investment into sport.”

Dept of Transport, Tourism & Sport Press Release (Extract), 14th October

Dept of Transport, Tourism & Sport Budget will further support job creation – Donohoe & Ring

Targeted investment in public transport and road network & continuation of 9% VAT rate will support economic activity and enhance job growth

  • Retention of the lower VAT rate will encourage employment in tourism sector
  • Maintenance of PSO at current levels & targeted investment in  public transport and road network will enable economic growth
  • New round of Sports Capital Programme (SCP) funding will help support construction industry & improve nation’s health

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, and the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, today (Tuesday) said measures contained in Budget 2015, including the retention of the 9% VAT rate, the safeguarding of Public Service Obligation (PSO) funding for public transport and a new round of Sports Capital funding will contribute to the Government’s overall objective of creating 100,000 additional jobs by 2016. The total capital spend for the Department in 2015 will be more than €950 million; an increase of €50 million on 2014 when once-off stimulus funding for this year is factored out.

Speaking this afternoon, Minister Donohoe said: ‘The Irish people have been through a great deal over the last number of years and have made sacrifices to ensure our finances were stabilised and our economic recovery put in place. This Budget is about securing that recovery and implementing the most effective job creation measures to enable the continuation of the growth we have seen under this Government’.

New round of the Sports Capital Programme

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD said: ‘The allocation of a further round of SCP funding this year, which is the third round of funding during our term in Government, will provide opportunities for clubs and organisations around the country to apply for funds. By facilitating essential works to be carried out on pitches, clubhouses, and in respect of things such as lighting, the construction industry stands to benefit. This investment in sport also ensure that greater participation is encouraged, which has hugely positive social, physical and mental implications both for the individual and for broader society.

“In addition to this, the maintenance of current expenditure funding for sport at 2014 levels will allow the Irish Sports Council to continue what can only be described as an exceptionally successful programme for high performance sport next year, which will facilitate our athletes in their preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Minister Donohoe concluded: ‘We owe it to ourselves to ensure that the mistakes of the past are never again repeated and to ensure that our recovery is cemented. A jobs focused Budget such as this is instrumental in achieving that aim. Continuing to set goals so that we, as a country, can reach our true potential, get our people back to work and ensure that the recovery is felt in every corner of the country is our single objective. My Department has a central role in that, which I am determined to see fulfilled.”

Dublin GAA star Bernard Brogan has been appointed President of the Federation of Irish Sport. The Federation is the umbrella body for all of Irish sports governing bodies. In his role as President Bernard will work with the Federation to create greater awareness of the vital role sport can and does play across so many different areas of Irish life.

Role of Sport in Irish Society - Breakfast Event

In what has been a brilliant sports career to date Bernard has won two All-Ireland and National League titles with Dublin, been an All Star three times, is a 7 time Leinster Championship Winner, was awarded the Footballer of the Year in 2010 and represented Ireland as an International Rules Player. The Federation has over the last number of years through its, Why Irish Sport Matters Campaign, united Irish Sport under one umbrella and had made significant strides in raising awareness of the multiple dividends sport provides to both the economic and social life of the country. Included amongst its recent successes are securing the inclusion of sport at the Global Economic Forum in October 2013 as well as obtaining a commitment from Government to developing a Cross Government Sports Policy – an initiative first called for by the Federation in its 2012 Annual Review of Irish Sport.

Role of Sport in Irish Society - Breakfast Event

Speaking on his appointment, Bernard said:

“Having being involved all my life as a player of sport, I have seen at first hand the benefits of being involved in sport to my own life, the friendships I have made, the places sport has taken me and the focus it provided me in trying to match my achievements on the field of play to my life away from sport. More recently, I have made the transition into the business of sport establishing Legacy Sports & Entertainment Consultants with my cousin, James evidence of my belief that sport is a sector that does and can play an even bigger role in the economic and social life of Ireland. I am therefore delighted to take up the challenge of being President of the Federation and look forward to working closely with the Federation and its members to further spread the message of the true value of sport to Ireland.”

Commenting on Bernard’s appointment as President, the Federation’s CEO Sarah O’Connor said;

“The Federation are delighted that such an accomplished and decorated athlete as Bernard has agreed to take up the mantle and serve as President. It is hoped that Bernard’s involvement with the Federation will facilitate even greater awareness and discussions around the role of sport in Irish Society. We firmly believe that sport can help Ireland achieve many of our national objectives a process which is already underway in countries such as Singapore through their national sports strategy, Vision2030. Bernard really believes in the power of sport not just because of his experiences as an athlete but also through his recent transition to the business of sport. This makes Bernard the perfect person to work with us as we try to ensure a more strategic approach to sport is adopted by Government to the benefit of all of Ireland’s citizens.”
