Swim Ireland Vision:
“To inspire and empower people in Ireland of all ages and abilities to participate
in our sport and to embrace a healthy lifestyle”
The Irish Amateur Swimming Association, trading as Swim Ireland, is the national governing body for the aquatic sports of swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming on the island of Ireland. It is recognised as such by Sport Ireland, Sport NI, the Olympic Council of Ireland, LEN & FINA (European & World Aquatic Governing Bodies) and the Federation of Irish Sport. The organisation was formed in 1893 and adopted the trading name of Swim Ireland in 1998. It has over 16,000 members and over 160 affiliated clubs. The legal structure is that of a private company, limited by guarantee.
Swim Ireland has an annual turnover of approximately €3million, of which 56% is generated through government investment administered through Sport Ireland. Strategic direction and leadership comes from the 11 strong Swim Ireland board and the operations are managed by the CEO, Sarah Keane, in conjunction with 25 members of staff.
Swim Ireland was the first sporting NGB to sign up to the voluntary governance code for charitable and non-profit organisations and in line with best governance practice is now seeking to appoint two Non-Executive Directors who are independent of the organisation to join the Board. This is the first time in the organisation’s history that non-members will be allowed to serve on the Board and represents an exciting opportunity to influence the development of the organisation and the sport into the future. A Nominations Committee has been convened to identify suitable candidates for the role and will recommend a single nominee for each position for election at the Company Annual General Meeting (AGM) which takes place on May 28th 2016. Expressions of interest are invited to email@example.com on or before Friday 4th March 2015 outlining suitability. All applications will be reviewed by the Nominations Committee.
In addition to their fiduciary duties Board Directors are expected to scrutinise operational plans and decisions in a constructive manner and to be involved in setting the strategic direction of the organisation beyond 2016.
The current (2013 to 2016) Strategic Plan is focused on transitioning from an organisation that is associated mainly with competitive swimming to one that is also seen as promoting participation across all of the aquatics and providing expertise in the lifelong sport of swimming. It is only throughout the course of this plan that Swim Ireland has begun to engage with the commercial/private sector and to begin building a strong brand within the swimming industry and the health sector in Ireland and beyond allowing directors the opportunity to influence health, education and social well-being.
The new Board Members will ideally have at least three years’ experience as a Board Director in another organisation and have experience at senior levels in one of the following areas:
- Public Relations
- Event Management
- Change Management/HR
- Commercial/Financial/Risk Management
The Board meets approximately every six weeks and meetings generally take place in Irish Sports HQ in Dublin. In common with the majority of sporting and non-profit organisations the Board Directors serve in a voluntary capacity. Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed in line with Swim Ireland Financial Policies.
