Swim Ireland Participation Support Officer

(with special responsibility for Community Open Water events)

(Part Time/3 Month Contract)

A very exciting opportunity has arisen in Swim Ireland for a dynamic, organised and experienced individual to support the Participation Department in the delivery of a number of our programmes. The Participation Support Officer, a part time, 3-month contract, will play a key role in supporting our Participation Department in the delivery of both the indoor and outdoor programmes.

Swim Ireland is the National Governing Body for the Aquatic Disciplines in Ireland, recognised as such by the Irish Government, Sport Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland, the Olympic Council of Ireland and FINA and LEN, the World and European Aquatic Governing Bodies.

Some Key Responsibilities for the role include:

  • Responsible for the delivery of SFAM Open Sea and other participation events
  • Support the delivery of open water events with key partners
  • Liaising with and building relationships with event organisers and suppliers
  • Responsible for the co-ordination of a calendar of events over the Summer months
  • Attend meetings with relevant Committees
  • Support the Clubs and Community department in achieving its goals

Reports to Trish Mayon (PR, Events and Participation Manager)



To support in the delivery and organisation of Swim Ireland’s Participation programme of events and different initiatives supporting the open water and participation pathway within Ireland.




Responsibilities for the Participation Support Officer will include:



· Support events delivered by participation department such as Docklands Dip, training clinics and other events.


Swim for a Mile (Open Water)

· Responsible for all aspects of event planning and delivery including the co-ordination of staff and volunteers (before, during and after events) within an agreed budget

· Liaising with and building relationships with event organisers

· Booking of all venues and requirements as needed

· Organisation and delivery of training/participation clinics in lead up to main event

·Other aspects of delivery as required


Special Membership

·Attend Leinster Open Sea Races as required to support delivery of events and race sign up (These are predominately on the weekend)

· Support relationship between Leinster Open Sea and Swim Ireland

· Promote Special Membership category

Selection Criteria including qualifications, knowledge and experience, and skills and attributes Essential Desirable
Relevant third level qualification or experience in Sports Development, Sports and Recreation, Event Management P  
Current and clean drivers’ licence P  
Knowledge and Experience    
Detailed knowledge of aquatics and open water swimming within Ireland P  
Experience in event management and operational delivery P  
Track record of delivering to target and budget within a deadline driven environment P  
Experience of working as part of a team P  
Experience in working within a swimming club or at a regional/national level.   P
Skills and attributes    
Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with a range of personnel (e.g. swimmers, professionals, coaches, officials and event organisers) and build relationships P  
Comprehensive literacy, numeric and IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Database) P  
Ability to be self-starting and take ownership of challenges P  
Capable of working independently, and having responsibility as an individual P  
Ability to report effectively P  
Strong planning and organisational skills, to include attention to detail. P  
Ability to communicate effectively in English P  
Willingness to work unsocial hours/weekends P  
Willingness to travel to and between a number of different work locations P
