Introduction: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our organisation as the Chairperson of Badminton Ireland. This is a unique opportunity to lead and shape the future of badminton in our community.

The Chairperson of the Board carries the ultimate responsibility for the governance of the Company and the direction of its affairs.  His/her responsibility includes leading the Board and the CEO. At all times the Chairperson should manage his/her duties according our purpose and our values.

About Us: Badminton Ireland is the National Governing Body for Badminton for the 32 Counties in Ireland. We work with the four Badminton Ireland Branches of Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster, along with external stakeholders including Sport Ireland, Sport NI, Olympic Federation of Ireland, Irish Institute of Sport, Coaching Ireland, Federation of Irish Sports and the Local Sports Partnership network.

Badminton Ireland has a strong participation base with 16,000 affiliated members and volunteers across 397 clubs alongside a healthy social and competitive base. Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992, and we’re proud of our Olympians – Sonya McGinn, Scott Evans, Chloe Magee, Nhat Nguyen and Rachael Darragh.

Badminton is a company limited by guarantee, with a CEO and full time staff of 19.

Role and Responsibilities: The Chairperson will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Board and the organisation, which the CEO and the Executive Staff lead and execute on a daily basis.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and strategies.
  • Ensure effective governance and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in partnership with the Chair of Governance.
  • On occasion, represent the organisation at official functions and in the media.
  • Foster relationships with stakeholders, including Badminton leaders, sponsors, partners, and the community, supporting the operational requirements of the Executive Staff.
  • Chair Board meetings to ensure effective decision-making processes.

Indication of time commitment: Self driven 7/9 hours per week with peaks around key annual events and governance milestones.

Key Selection Criteria:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven leadership experience, preferably in a sports or non-profit organisation.
  • Understanding of Committee structures.
  • Knowledge and experience of Governance, risk and fiduciary duties of Board and Chair as Directors of a company.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to support the Executive Staff in building and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • A passion for badminton/sport and a commitment to promoting the sport.
  • Time to devote to the demands of the role.
